The “Hydro Dipz” series, co-designed by James Shaw and Soft Baroque, plays with the hydrographic transferring process. A thin film can be seamlessly applied onto 3D surfaces as a means of superficial decoration. The finish is a form of value alchemy: objects can divorce themselves from their “authentic” material properties and take on another material symbolism. We can now scroll through and assign textures in a similar way to a digital rendering of a computer-generated object. “HD Shelf” is a stack of eight independent rotating aluminum boxes, displaying a different material identity depending on its orientation. The hewn maple “HD Bench” has an imbedded hi-definition wet look applied onto a substantial and handmade object.
