When blond wood burns, its surface thins and grooves start to appear. The pattern it creates is known as “alligatoring,” for it resembles dark, dry, reptilian skin. Like the grain of the wood, the damage after fire is also unique, meaning that each “Smoke” piece is naturally different in its appearance. Once the wood is carbonized, Maarten Baas finishes the furniture with transparent epoxy resin, returning it to use without repair. Since 2002, Baas has burned a variety of furniture, including 25 design icons such as Rietveld, Eames, and Gaudi.
